Custom BBQ Island in Upland California: Transforming a Cracked Concrete Backyard

Project Overview: A Fresh Start

This project began with a 55×35 ft backyard that had suffered from years of neglect—cracked, uneven concrete made the space uninviting. Located on San Antonio Ave in Upland, California, the client needed a complete backyard makeover that was both practical and stylish. They envisioned a space that could be enjoyed every day, combining functionality with a modern look.

Design & Material Selection

We decided on an aluminum patio cover to protect the area while giving it a clean, contemporary feel. Beneath this cover, we installed a custom L-shaped BBQ island, measuring 11×7 ft, designed to make the best use of the space. A durable, 3-inch thick concrete countertop was chosen for its strength and longevity, while quality stacked stone from Eldorado Stone added an attractive, refined finish. To complete the outdoor kitchen, we incorporated essential features such as a 32-inch Lion Grill, a sink, and appliance doors.

Installation Process & Timeline

The project kicked off with the removal of the old concrete and thorough site preparation. The construction phase took about 4 weeks, during which we built the BBQ island with precision and care. In addition to the construction time, there was a 3-week waiting period for the necessary electrical, gas, and patio cover permits. Throughout the process, our team worked closely together to ensure every detail was handled efficiently.

Overcoming Challenges & Custom Solutions

One of the major challenges was addressing the existing concrete issues. We managed to fix the cracked and uneven surfaces effectively, which allowed us to lay a strong foundation for the new design. Although permit delays added extra time to the project, we kept everything on track by planning accordingly. We also took great care to match the new materials with the home’s existing style, ensuring a seamless look throughout the space. The design was optimized to suit the 55×35 ft area without feeling crowded.

Final Outcome & Client Satisfaction

The transformation was remarkable—a once tired backyard was turned into a modern outdoor living space that meets both aesthetic and functional needs. The client was thrilled with the results, noting how well the design balanced style with practicality. The improvements were evident in every aspect, from the fresh, clean look of the concrete countertop to the efficient layout of the L-shaped BBQ island and the protective patio cover.

Conclusion

Building this custom L-shaped BBQ island in Upland, California turned a disappointing, cracked backyard into a welcoming outdoor living area. With a sturdy aluminum patio cover, a solid 3-inch concrete countertop, and quality touches like stacked stone and a 32-inch Lion Grill, the project truly delivers on both form and function.
